Jo’s Pasture Raised Food is a South African farmer based near Harrismith in the Free State, raising chickens with an emphasis on outdoor access, natural behaviour, responsible farming and greater transparency about how food is produced.

Their chickens spend their days roaming on pasture with access to fresh grass, open air and natural sunlight. Rather than remaining permanently in one area, the birds sleep and lay in mobile trailers that Jo’s regularly moves onto fresh sections of pasture.

This pasture-based system gives the chickens space to move, forage, scratch and explore their surroundings – behaviours that chickens naturally want to express.

For Organic Choice, however, the relationship with Jo’s goes much further than a supplier specification. We have personally visited the farm near Harrismith, met Jo and spent time discussing both the benefits and the very real challenges involved in raising healthy, clean birds.
