What Makes Avocado Different from Most Fruits?
Botanically, avocado is a fruit – more specifically, a berry with a single large seed. Nutritionally, however, it is quite different from most of the sweet fruits we commonly eat.
While fruits such as apples, oranges and grapes contain very little fat, avocado naturally contains a substantial amount. Most of its fat content is oleic acid-rich monounsaturated fat, the same predominant type of fatty acid found in olive oil.
This combination of healthy fats and fibre gives avocado its distinctive creamy texture and makes it an unusual member of the fruit world.
Did You Know?
Avocados ripen after they are picked
Avocados are unusual because the fruit matures on the tree but generally softens and develops its familiar eating texture after harvesting.
Want to ripen an avocado more quickly?
Place a firm avocado in a paper bag with a banana or apple. These fruits release ethylene, a natural plant compound involved in ripening, which can help speed up the process.
Avocado can help us absorb nutrients from other vegetables
Here’s another reason avocado works so well in salads. Carotenoids such as beta-carotene and lutein are fat-soluble, so dietary fat helps the body absorb them.
Adding avocado to a colourful vegetable salad therefore provides more than flavour and creaminess – its natural fat can also increase the absorption of fat-soluble carotenoids from the other vegetables in the meal.
