What Is Glycine?
Glycine is the simplest amino acid and one of the building blocks the body uses for proteins and other biologically important compounds. It is classified as a non-essential amino acid, which means the human body can produce it rather than relying entirely on food to supply it.
However, “non-essential” does not mean unimportant. Glycine participates in numerous physiological processes and is especially significant in connective tissue.
Glycine & Collagen
One of glycine’s most interesting roles is its relationship with collagen.
Collagen has a distinctive amino-acid composition, and glycine accounts for roughly one-third of its amino acids. Its unusually small molecular structure allows collagen chains to pack tightly together and form their characteristic triple-helix structure.
Therefore, glycine is an important structural component of collagen found throughout the body’s skin, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, bones and other connective tissues.
Glycine, Creatine & Glutathione
Glycine also contributes to the synthesis of several other important compounds. For example, the body combines glycine with arginine and methionine during the production of creatine, a compound involved in cellular energy metabolism, particularly in muscle and other tissues with high energy requirements.
Glycine is also one of the three amino acids used to make glutathione, together with cysteine and glutamate. Glutathione functions as an important antioxidant within the body and contributes to normal cellular protection against oxidative stress.
Glycine & Sleep Research
Glycine also functions as a neurotransmitter and participates in signalling within the nervous system.
Interestingly, small human studies have investigated glycine taken before bedtime in relation to subjective sleep quality, daytime fatigue and alertness after restricted sleep.
Did You Know?
Glycine has a naturally sweet taste, even though it is an amino acid rather than a sugar.
Its name actually comes from the Greek word glykys, meaning “sweet”.
This naturally mild sweetness makes pure glycine powder easy to add to drinks, smoothies, yoghurt and desserts without the need for added sugar or artificial flavouring.
