Good Life Wellness Good Gut is a comprehensive powder blend combining amino acids, plant ingredients and minerals to support normal digestive and gut function as part of a balanced diet.

The formula provides L-Glutamine, organic Baobab Fruit Powder, deglycyrrhised Liquorice Extract (DGL), Slippery Elm, Marshmallow Root, OptiMSM® and chelated Zinc.

Each ingredient brings something different to the blend. L-Glutamine is an amino acid used extensively by cells of the intestinal tract, while Baobab provides plant fibre. Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root have a long history of traditional use for their naturally occurring mucilage. In addition, the formula provides 10mg elemental zinc as highly absorbable zinc bisglycinate chelate.

A Closer Look at Good Gut

L-Glutamine & the Intestinal Lining

At 4500mg per serving, L-Glutamine forms the largest component of Good Gut.

Glutamine is an amino acid with a particularly important relationship to the intestinal lining. The rapidly renewing epithelial cells that line the intestine, known as enterocytes, use glutamine as an important energy source.

Scientific research has shown that glutamine contributes to the maintenance of the intestinal barrier, including the growth and renewal of intestinal cells and the regulation of tight-junction proteins that help maintain normal intestinal permeability. Experimental studies have found that inadequate glutamine availability can compromise intestinal barrier integrity, while supplementation has been investigated for its potential to support barrier function. (PubMed)

Human clinical research is encouraging in some circumstances, although results are not uniform. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials found that glutamine did not significantly reduce intestinal permeability overall, but did find benefits in certain subgroups according to dose and treatment duration. Other clinical research has reported improved measures of intestinal permeability in specific situations, including patients undergoing abdominal surgery. (PubMed Central (PMC))

Therefore, L-Glutamine is particularly relevant in a formula designed to support normal intestinal barrier and gut function.

Baobab – Plant Fibre from an African Fruit

Good Gut provides 1500mg organic Baobab Fruit Powder per serving.

Baobab (Adansonia digitata) fruit naturally contains dietary fibre, including fermentable fibre that can provide a substrate for microorganisms within the gut. For this reason, baobab is increasingly interesting as a food ingredient in research into prebiotic nutrition and the gut microbiome.

Slippery Elm & Marshmallow Root

Slippery Elm (Ulmus rubra) and Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis) share an interesting botanical characteristic: both contain naturally occurring mucilage.

When mixed with liquid, these plant polysaccharides develop a smooth, gel-like consistency. Consequently, both plants have a long history of traditional use in preparations intended to soothe the digestive tract.

Deglycyrrhised Liquorice – What Does DGL Mean?

Good Gut contains deglycyrrhised Liquorice Extract, commonly known as DGL.

DGL is liquorice from which most of the naturally occurring compound glycyrrhizin has been removed. This distinguishes it from ordinary liquorice-root preparations and makes it particularly useful in formulations intended for regular digestive support.

Zinc

Each serving provides 10mg elemental Zinc from TRAACS® Zinc Bisglycinate Chelate.

Zinc is an essential mineral with numerous functions in the body. Among these, it contributes to normal immune-system function, normal protein synthesis and the protection of cells from oxidative stress.

Did You Know?

The intestinal tract does much more than digest food. Its lining forms an important interface between the contents of the digestive system and the rest of the body.

The gut also contains a complex community of microorganisms collectively known as the gut microbiome.

This is why gut health cannot be attributed to one ingredient alone. Diet, fibre intake, hydration, physical activity, sleep and the diversity of foods we eat can all contribute to normal digestive function.

Good Gut is designed to complement these foundations.
