Why take Methylene Blue with Liposomal absorption?
Methylene Blue (MB) is a unique electron cycler, capable of donating and accepting electrons. Once absorbed MB concentrates in tissues with high mitochondrial density, including the brain (where it readily crosses the blood-brain barrier), heart, liver, and kidneys.
At low doses, MB unlocks remarkable cellular benefits. Here is how MB supports cellular function:
- Optimizes Mitochondrial Efficiency – By accelerating cytochrome oxidase (Complex IV) activity, MB increases oxygen consumption and ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) production, particularly benefiting high-energy cells like neurons. ATP is the energy currency of the cell.
- Enhances ATP (energy) Production – MB donates electrons to the electron transport chain (ETC), boosting adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production. This effect occurs even in low-oxygen conditions.
- Supports Glucose Metabolism & NAD+ Production – MB enhances glucose metabolism in anaerobic conditions and increases NAD+ levels, which may promote cellular longevity via sirtuin activation.
- Acts as a Potent Antioxidant – As a free radical scavenger, MB protects mitochondria and cells from oxidative stress, potentially offering neuroprotection and skin health benefits.
- Boosts Mood & Neurotransmitters – MB functions as a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor, preventing the breakdown of dopamine, serotonin, and melatonin, which may contribute to its antidepressant properties.
- Improves Oxygen Delivery – MB alters hemoglobin’s iron (heme) configuration in red blood cells, enhancing oxygen-carrying capacity and further driving ATP synthesis.
- Enhances Cognitive Function – By inhibiting cholinesterase, MB increases acetylcholine levels, supporting memory, attention, and motivation.
- Supports Antimicrobial Defense – When combined with specific light spectrums (primarily UV), MB may exhibit antiviral and antibacterial properties.
Methylene Blue and Biofilms:
Higher doses of low-dose methylene blue (>1mg/kg) may disrupt healthy gut biofilms, potentially harming gut lining and microbiota.
Biofilms are communities of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, protists) that form protective layers on surfaces, including in the gut. They create a sticky substance (EPS) that helps them stick together and exchange genetic material. In the gut, biofilms support immune function and protect the intestinal lining.
However, some biofilms, like dental plaque or bacterial infections, can become harmful, as they shield harmful bacteria. Methylene blue can break down biofilms, especially when used with photodynamic therapy. It’s sometimes used in higher doses (50mg twice daily) for infections like Bartonella.
Warnings: MB has been used safely for over a century, but high doses (>3 mg/kg) or prolonged use can be toxic. It may also disrupt biofilms and have a long half-life.
Do not take MB if you:
- have hepatic or renal impairment
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
- have a sensitivity to methylene blue or thiazine dyes
- are using SSRIs, SNRIs, psychedelics, or other serotonin-reuptake inhibitors, as this can cause serotonin syndrome.
Storage instructions: Store below 25˚C. Keep away from children and animals.
