About Papaya and Papain

Papaya (Carica papaya) is a tropical fruit traditionally valued both as a food and for its naturally occurring enzymes. Although ripe papaya contains several enzymes, papain is found in particularly high concentrations in the milky latex of the unripe fruit.

Papain belongs to a group of enzymes known as proteases, or proteolytic enzymes. These enzymes help break large protein molecules into smaller peptides and amino acids that can be processed more easily during digestion. Unlike the body’s own digestive enzymes, which may function best within specific pH ranges, papain remains active across a relatively broad range of conditions.

Did You Know?

The word “papain” comes from papaya, the plant from which this enzyme is obtained. Papain is sometimes compared to bromelain, the proteolytic enzyme derived from pineapple, because both are plant-based enzymes that act on proteins.

Enzyme supplements are measured not only by their weight in milligrams but also by their activity. The USP activity stated on the label indicates the enzyme’s ability to perform its intended function. This means enzyme activity is an important consideration alongside the amount of papain contained in each capsule.
