Folate (L-methylfolate) is crucial for the development of a healthy foetus. It can significantly reduce the chance of neural tube defects (NTDs), such as spina bifida. Women planning a pregnancy should ideally take 400μg daily for at least 3 months prior to conception and then during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, when the baby’s spine and nervous system are developing. Research has shown that calcium L-methylfolate is a more bioavailable form of folate rather than folic acid as it is better absorbed, and not affected by metabolic defects.
The vitamin B12 used in Terranova Prenatal Multivitamin is in the form of methylcobalamin which has been shown to have superior bioavailability in comparison with the more commonly used cyanocobalamin form of B12. Methylcobalamin has been shown to be better absorbed and retained in higher amounts within body tissues, which results in more effective utilisation. During pregnancy, B12 has many important roles, including supporting red blood cell formation, reducing fatigue and encouraging healthy cell division.
