Flax Seed Oil, 250ml (Crede Natural Oils)

R64.00

Crede Natural Oils’ cold pressed flax seed oil is made from the seeds of the flax plant. The seeds are cold pressed to ensure that the temperature sensitive poly unsaturated fats (Omega 3 & 6) are preserved. Flax seed oil has a distinctive nutty taste and aroma and can be taken as a supplement or added to foods. The oil is best kept in fridge or in a cool space away from light, in order to preserve the healthy fatty acids.

Health Benefits of Flaxseed Oil
Flaxseed oil is extracted from the seeds of the flax plant, and is one of the richest natural sources of omega-3 essential fatty acids. Its a popular and effective nutritional supplement, because of its high concentration of ALA (omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid). Flaxseed oil contains far more omega-3s than most other common seed oils, as well as disease-fighting lignans that come from the flaxseed shell. Did you know? During digestion, the ALAs in flaxseed oil get partly converted into EPA and DHA the two chief omega-3 fatty acids found in marine oils.
Omega-3s and ALA ALA is an omega-3 essential fatty acid one of the vital nutrients our bodies need that cannot be made up from anything else. Unfortunately, foods naturally high in omega-3s (nuts, seeds, and dark leafy greens) feature far less in the modern Western diet than they should. Cooking or processing these foods dramatically decreases their benefit as well, which can make getting enough omega-3s a challenge. Taking an omega-3 supplement like flaxseed oil makes it a lot easier to meet the dietary requirements recommended by nutritionists.
Research suggests omega-3s are beneficial for:

  • Reducing inflammation
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Improving cardiovascular health
  • Improving skin health
  • Reducing symptoms of ADHD
  • Promoting healthy brain development in children

CredFlaxseed Oil is cold-pressed and unfiltered, to retain the lignans found naturally in the oil. It is packaged in dark, glass bottles to protect the oil from light and oxygen, which could degrade the quality of the product over time. The company recommends refrigerating the flaxseed oil (especially once the bottle has been opened) as this slows down the rate of oxidation, and preserves your oil for longer. Plastic bottles are somewhat porous, and allow oxygen to penetrate over time, reducing the lifespan of the product within. This is why CredFlaxseed Oil is always sold in glass.

Fish or flax?
There is an on-going debate over which source of omega-3s is the best: plant-based ALA (flaxseed), or marine-based EPA and DHA (fish oil). At Cred we believe that there are advantages and disadvantages to both, but our chief concern lies in quality control.
Studies have brought widespread issues to light regarding the nutritional content and freshness of South African fish oil products: More than half the fish oil did not contain as much EPA and DHA as claimed, and roughly 75% showed signs of rancidity. The unfortunate truth is that its very difficult to tell whats inside the softgel capsule that is the most popular delivery form for fish oil.
Quality issues aside, the nutritional debate revolves around the conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA. While small-sample studies suggest that conversion to ALA to EPA is fine, conversion of ALA to DHA may be low. The first large-sample study of this issue, however, showed that the EPA and DHA levels of non-fish-eaters was generally on par with those of fish-eaters. This suggests that consuming EPA and DHA directly, or consuming ALA and converting it into EPA and DHA, has a very similar result in the end.
Did you know?
One 15ml tablespoon of flaxseed oil can be converted into roughly 1,200mg of EPA and 400mg of DHA. Thats more than 4 capsules of fish oil, and more than enough to meet daily nutritional requirements.
