Garlic is part of the same family as onion, leeks, chives and shallots. All parts of the garlic plant (bulb, stem and leaves) can be eaten or used for their therapeutic properties. The fresh green stem and leaves have gentle flavour and can used instead of chives, while the ripe bulb has strong odour and is a common ingredient is sauces, roasted veggies or meat and cooked meals. Consuming garlic is said to lower the blood pressure and regulate cholesterol levels. Garlic is also recommended as a natural antibiotic ingredient and for treating common cold and flu.
